Puppy Socialisation
Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS)
Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) is a proven program designed to enhance a puppy’s long-term ability to cope with change, build resilience, and strengthen early socialisation foundations.
The protocol we follow is based on the research and development of Dr. Carmen L. Battaglia, whose work focuses on producing confident, adaptable, and well-balanced dogs.
At Swayd, we don’t stop there. We thoughtfully combine ENS with The Rules of 7 by Pat Schaap, creating a structured yet nurturing approach that supports puppies both neurologically and socially during their most critical developmental period.
The Rules of 7
The Rules of 7 provide a clear goal-based framework for early socialisation. The aim is for each puppy to have confidently experienced and mastered a variety of stimuli by the time they reach seven weeks of age — setting them up for success well beyond the puppy pen.
By seven weeks old, each puppy should have:
- Experienced 7 different types of surfaces
- Played with 7 different types of objects
- Visited 7 different locations
- Met and interacted with 7 new people
- Been exposed to 7 different challenges
- Eaten from 7 different containers
- Eaten in 7 different locations
Why It Matters
Together, ENS and the Rules of 7 support healthy neurological development, strengthen the immune system, and help puppies adapt more confidently to new environments and experiences. The result? Puppies that are healthier, happier, and naturally self-assured — exactly how we like them.
