Colour Genetics

Let me just say, there are no rare colors of Great Danes - only correct and incorrect colors and markings.
Some breeders will try to pass off their incorrect colours/markings as hard to find, rare, special and even designer colours. Remember correct or incorrect. Period.

It is my belief that breeders should not purposely produce incorrect colors, every breeders goal should be to produce the most correct Great Dane possible, this includes color.

ANKC (Australian National Kennel Council) Main Registered colours -
Black, Blue, Brindle, Fawn, Mantle and Harlequins.
Every other colour must be registered on limited register, and can not be breed from nor shown.

I feel that merle needs a special mention.
Merles are a natural occurance in Harlequin breeding programs, although they are not able to be placed on the main register as of 21 Oct 2006, they are not a rare occurance, they are very common in Harlequin & Mantle litters.
